It is often said that non-woven covers in UAE are biodegradable. This is INCORRECT in most cases.
There are different types of non-woven fabric and each type of non-woven fabric can be made from different types of fibers. The type of fiber determines whether a nonwoven material is biodegradable or not.
In most cases (more than 90% as of 2012), "non-woven shopping bags" are made of polypropylene. Non-woven tote bags in UAE fabric and polypropylene is the type of fiber. Polypropylene is NOT biodegradable.
Spunbond can be produced with biodegradable fibers, but to date it is a small market because biodegradable fibers are more than twice as expensive as polypropylene.
- It is said that non-woven bags are recyclable. This is TRUE, but the old disposable plastic bags are also recyclable: they are made with a polyethylene film; and polyethylene is recyclable. The problem is the cost of recycling. But the cost of recycling is almost the same for disposable bags and non-woven bags.
- It is almost always said that non-woven hotel products in UAE are ecological. Well, it's a very moot point.
Spunbond polypropylene shopping bags do no more damage to the environment than disposable plastic bags. But being more environmentally friendly is very difficult to prove.
Non-woven shopping bags made from biodegradable fibers are a much better response and are much more environmentally friendly. By the way, disposable plastic bags can also be made with biodegradable plastic.

Nice Post. I recently learnt that eco friendly products made from corn-starch, bagasse & cassava are bio-degradable, compostable & do not harm the environment in their entire life-cycle.
